Today, we’re diving into one of the greatest unsolved language mysteries in human history: the Indus Script—also known as the Indus Valley Script or Harappan Script.
This ancient system of symbols is believed to have been used between 3500 and 1900 B.C., yet to this day, no one has been able to fully decipher it.
The story of its discovery is just as intriguing as the script itself. Early finds were reported by a British traveler known as Major Clark, but it was Sir Alexander Cunningham who formally documented and published the inscriptions in 1853. Unfortunately, Cunningham misdated the script by more than 2,000 years, assuming it belonged to either ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia. It took over half a century before researchers realized this was an entirely different—and much older—civilization’s writing system.
These artifacts were uncovered at the ancient site of Harappa, part of what we now call the Indus Valley Civilization, which stretched across modern-day Pakistan and northwest India.
What makes the Indus Script so fascinating is how widespread it was—and how short the inscriptions are. Found on seals, tablets, and pottery, most texts contain only a handful of symbols, ranging from as few as 5 to around 26 characters. Because of this, scholars often call it the “world’s unread library.”
Experts believe the symbols may have been used for trade, administration, ownership marks, accounting, or even government communication—but none of these theories can be confirmed.
And here’s the biggest twist:
Despite decades of study, no one alive today has been able to decipher the script. We don’t know the language, we don’t know the grammar, and we don’t even know the exact meaning behind a single complete text with certainty.
That’s what makes it so powerful.
The Indus Script remains one of history’s ultimate unsolved linguistic mysteries—a silent civilization still trying to speak across thousands of years.

It was first discovered on July 3, 1908, by Luigi Pernier during excavations at the ancient Palace of Phaistos. This remarkable artifact has puzzled historians, archaeologists, and language experts for more than a century.
The Phaistos Disc is a circular piece of fired clay measuring approximately 6.3 inches (16 centimeters) in diameter. It is believed to have been created during the Middle or Late Bronze Age by the mysterious Minoan civilization. Both sides of the disc are covered with an intricate spiral of stamped symbols and markings, containing 241 total impressions made up of 45 distinct signs.
But here’s where the mystery gets deeper.
Despite decades of study and countless attempts to decipher it, no one has been able to definitively determine what language the disc represents or what its symbols actually mean. Is it a prayer? A poem? A ritual text? A game board? A coded message from an ancient civilization? The truth remains unknown.
And that, DETECTIVES, is what makes the Phaistos Disc one of the greatest writing mysteries of all time.
Imagine holding an object created thousands of years ago—one that carries a message humanity still cannot read. It’s like receiving a letter from the distant past, sealed with secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Hey there, DETECTIVES! DETECTIVE WRITER here and I’m thrilled to finally share something very close to my heart — my new book, The Journey Within: Dreams Across Borders. This story is a labor of love, written from my perspective as a daughter, telling the remarkable life of my father.
The Journey Within is about more than immigration or achieving success — it is about courage, perseverance, and the quiet determination it takes to build a life from the ground up in a new country. My father left South America with little more than hope, a few crumpled bills, and a dream of reuniting with his mother in North America.
When he first arrived, he worked in factories and took on whatever jobs he could find. It was far from easy, and the hours were long, but my father never lost sight of his goals. Through determination, hard work, and resilience, he steadily built a life filled with opportunities, eventually creating a home, raising a family, and sharing his love for the world and its possibilities.
In the book, I share not only the milestones of his life — from those first days in America to becoming a father, traveling the world, and becoming an American citizen — but also the small, intimate moments that shaped him: the wonder in children’s eyes as he drove a school bus, the joy of discovering new cities, and the lessons he quietly passed on through his actions.
This story is for anyone who has ever faced the uncertainty of leaving the familiar behind, who has dared to dream, and who believes that courage and perseverance can shape not just one life, but generations to come.
