Spooky + Mysterious Aspects of Life: 400 Year Old “Vampire!”

Hey there, DETECTIVES! DETECTIVE WRITER here to tell you all about a 2022 discovery in Poland, the remains of a young woman in an unmarked grave.

TRIGGER WARNING: I will be presenting images of a skeleton, if anyone is uncomfortable, please feel free to skip ahead, DETECTIVES.

The corpse of a young woman who was buried face down with an iron sickle around her neck and padlock on her foot, to ensure that she would never come back from the dead.

The young woman who was between the ages of 18 and 20, known by scientists and nicknamed by locals as “Zosia,” was entombed in an unmarked grave in the northern area of Poland, in Pien, and was suspected of being a vampire by her neighbors. Her grave was identified only as Grave No. 75.

Zosia lived in 17th-century Europe, where there was a large fear and panic of supernatural monsters, and she was believed to be a “Vampire child.” The objects that she was buried with were thought to magically protect humans against vampires and were specifically intended to do just that.

Through 3D printing, DNA, and modeling clay, scientists reconstructed Zosia’s face, and with her skull analysis, it was revealed that she had suffered from a health condition that may have contributed to fainting spells and migraines, including a few mental health issues. Scientists are considering the reconstruction as bringing Zosia back to life as well as others they continue to find to this day, including a child and a pregnant woman.

  1. Wow! Very interesting and the beliefs were so strong to make sure she couldn’t ‘rise’ from her grave. I wonder if she was murdered as they thought she was a vampire?
