Part 3
By Melissa Tejada
Complete shock passed through my mind as I see these two men hit the floor.
“Why would you do that?” I shrieked at Jack.
“How could you do that? These men were the only ones that would have been able to help me find my mother.” I felt faint as I started to sprint towards him, feeling the weight of everything that went on that day. Then, everything goes black. I wake up to Jack sitting on the side of the bed. Hoping for some kind of explanation, and frankly numbed from fear from all of the events that seem to have aged me fifteen years, I ask with tears welling in my eyes.
“What’s happening?”
“Well, from the looks of it you found out what your dad does.” He chuckles.
“How could you be laughing at a time like this? My mother is missing, men are being killed left and right and it’s all my dad’s fault! That lying, evil asshole almost murdered me tonight, and you have the audaci-“
“What are you talking about?” He interrupts me, waving away my words to the wind.
“Your mom is not missing, and what do you mean he tried to kill you? That makes no sense why would he do that?”
“He zip tied my arms and legs, and threw me into the back of a trunk! All he tells me is that he’s sorry and can’t let me ruin all that he’s built and starts to drive me away to kill me. It seems pretty clear what his intentions were.”
“If he wanted to kill you, why not just shoot you. Considering who he is I’m sure that wouldn’t have been a problem. Alicia, your father joined this family long before even I was born. He’s not stupid. If anything he was probably trying to protect you from Maxim. What I don’t understand is how did Maxim get past all of your father’s men? There are body guards all over your house at all times.”
“Wait how do you know all this, how do you know my father?”
“I kind of inherited this job. My father worked as your father’s right hand man. Your dad is a man of integrity and love. He isolated you from this life so you would be protected. So that you wouldn’t have to endure the scars that I did with this business.” “What about my mom, where is she?”
“She’s in an isolated island your father got. She’s been overwhelmed with the waging war that’s been going on lately between your father’s clan and Maxim’s. She was going to grass him out to the FBI in order to receive a shorter prison sentence so that you can all live your lives peacefully. But your father stopped her, knowing what happens to rats, and put her over there for her protection. Should she have grassed, there would have been a target on your back and hers. They were negotiating a peace treaty today, there must have been some shady work from Maxim’s men that all this spiraled out of control.”
“This is all my fault. I was being so emotional about my parents never being around I started to talk to Maxim. He messaged me online and I just kind of leaned into it. Yesterday was our first meet up. At least that explains why everyone was so quick to go all loose cannon when I showed up.”
“If anyone’s a loose cannon girl it’s you. How could you go off with a man you barely know?” At the understanding of those words, I sink into the bed. I don’t think I’ll ever find sleep, I don’t think I’ll ever find peace. I don’t think that I’ll ever manage to forgive myself for getting my father killed.
“At least you got to be a dumb teenager,” Jack says, laughing again.
“Emphasis on the dumb,” I say to myself.
“I got him killed, Jack.”
“You set him free, Alicia.”
“We need to find my mom.” Early morning I realize that Jack has gone remote silent. No technology, not a cellphone in sight, nothing but a walkie talkie. Dad must have been trying to alert Jack so that he can take me to my mom.
“Wait, those men, who were they?”
“They were Maxim’s men. They must have been the ones that killed your body guards and took their clothing. My best guess is they found my location and were going to capture me to get to Janice. Lucky you came around and redirected them, huh?” He gives me his sideway smile again. So much pain in that smile; so much hurt. So much comfort, understanding. I’m not sure if this is because of a hero complex but, his smile makes my stomach turn. Butterflies, flying freely throughout my body, creating an electricity that I’ve never felt before.
“You okay?” He questions, looking concerned. He holds my face in his hands, observing me and I realize I was staring, and he must have thought that I was going to faint again. As he stands there awkwardly, not letting my face go, he starts to look deep into my eyes. I clear my throat, and we both come back to reality.
“Sorry about that. Anyway, back to business.” I start packing a bag with clothes Jack lent me and a few weapons. You never know. We start walking out and I see what looks to be a broken down Jeep. Jack starts removing dirt from it, taking off stickers, and I see that it’s almost brand new. Camouflage seems to be second nature to him. We hop in and head to the airport. While we drive I see tall maple leaves, I take a minute to appreciate the giddy feeling in my heart. I’ll be with my mom soon. In her arms, and I’m never letting her go. I want to jump out and scream from joy, I settle for a contempt sigh as we make our way onto a pavement road.
A little while later, we’re boarding a private jet to get to my dad’s private island. I never thought I’d experience something like this. I knew my dad made profit, I didn’t realize he was into this life to this extent. Nonetheless, I find my way onto a nearby seat, and Jack sits across from me.
“There’s wardrobe for you in the drawer over there. Your father always kept up to date clothes for you in here in case you ever needed to mount last minute.” I pounce off the seat to go running into the drawers to change out of Jack’s clothes. Coming back, I sit back down in my seat.
“You look beautiful” Jack utters, almost in a whisper.
“Alicia, I have to confess something. I’ve loved you for so long, and I know you’re just meeting me and this is kind of weird.”
I give him a questioning look, “Okay very weird, to be confessing like this but, you’ve been through so much that I at least want to let you know you have someone on your side that is here unconditionally.” I take a minute to breathe. I hold his hand in mine and rub my thumb on his palm. I sit there thinking about what to say back, and I can almost hear his heart drumming in his chest from where I’m sitting.
“While I can’t say that my feelings have fallen as deep as yours just yet, I do feel an attraction. Thank you for sharing your feelings with me. You’re right, I feel comforted knowing I have someone who truly knows me, and someone who makes me feel that I can be myself. This is the first time in my life that I feel like I have a true connection.”
“Do you want to lay down and rest?” He says, placing his hand on my face just like earlier.
“Yes”. I get up and walk over to the bedroom nearby and lay on the bed. He comes and joins me, holds me. I lay on his chest, take a deep breathe and slip into sleep. When I wake up we’re already on the island. As I start walking down, I look up at Jack and see his jaw tense.
“Everything okay?” I ask, now on high alert.
“Peachy.” We drive out to a beautiful mansion. At least 20,000 square feet, huge glass pool, marble floors, it even has our family’s coat of arms on the gates of the entrance. I’m gaping at all of the marvelous things, marvelous sightings, but I don’t see the men rushing in on us. I don’t realize Maxim’s men are here until Jack is grabbing me and we’re running into the house. I realize, we were just let in. Are my dad’s men here too? I run up the stairs looking frantically for my mom.
Jack running behind me, “This way!” I follow suit, and we switch places. I run into what seems to be my mother’s walk-in closet, and find her standing there in Maxim’s arms. Roped and tied up, bleeding from her forehead, and I think I’m going to be sick.
Jack is on him in an instant,
“Come any closer, and I will shoot her brains out. This can be an easy exchange. Janice, for Alicia.”
“Oh, please.” Jack shoots Maxim in the foot, grabs my mom pushes both of us out of the closet. He slams his gun into Maxim’s forehead, shoots him in the shoulder and pulls Maxim’s hands on his back and up to his shoulder. Keeping him in this position, he has him on the floor, screaming. I throw up into a nearby bucket and Jack is screaming.
“Alicia, I get you’re new but you need to jump on this! Grab the knife from shoe, let your mom go, and go to the safety shelter with her. She should know where it is. Now!” I do my best to do as he says.
As I look over, I see Maxim reaching for a nearby gun, “Jack, look out!” He throws himself down onto Maxim to stop him. Janice and I run off to what I thought was a shelter. My mom takes me into a room, pulls a statue and a wall of guns appears.
“I’m not leaving him to fight all those men alone. The most that can happen is we’re staking out for months and these men take my house. Let’s go kill those bottom feeders.”
My mom takes a nearby walkie talkie and says “Pack it in, it’s a 97!” We make our way back and give Jack a new gun.
“Runs in the blood I guess,” I tell Jack laughing. Adrenaline is rushing through me, and before I know it I burst a kiss on him, and run. My dad’s men rush into the area, killing all of Maxim’s intruders. We shoot, kick, and drown all the men that found their way here. I see a baseball bat nearby, and while I’m grabbing the bat in one hand and the gun in the other, I spot Maxim at a distance.
“Cover me,” I yell to Jack. I make my way to him and as I get near, I see him lifting his gun to shoot me. I pull the trigger and get his hand.
“That one’s for ramming me in the car,” I growl at him. I shoot two more in both his knees, “that one’s for tricking me when I was vulnerable.” I get close enough to him, give Jack my gun and with both hands slam his head into the side pool pavement.
“That one’s for my dad, you piece of crap.” I spit on his face, grab the gun and shoot him right where he shot my dad. I feel oddly at peace knowing I avenged him, I grab my mom, and sob into her chest as she holds me close. Jack comes in and holds us close, and I mourn all my losses. I mourn the relationship I could have had with my dad, I mourn the past life I thought I loved, I mourn the person I was, but I cry tears of relief that I can finally have my family close.
The End…

Part 2
By Melissa Tejada
My dad takes out a Glock and I panic. I hear screaming and wonder where it’s coming from, until I realize it’s me. A shoot out ensues and I run. “Go get her before I kill every single one of you!” I realize I began a war with Maxim’s men and my father’s. Why the hell does my dad even own a gun? What was going on? My lungs are burning, my heels are in my hand and I’m running for dear life. “I’ve got her!” I hear a familiar voice say. I’m tackled to the ground and zip tied, my mouth covered shut. As I’m thrown into the back of a car’s trunk, I catch a glimpse of the captor.
“I’m sorry sweetie, but I can’t let you destroy everything I’ve built. Understand that despite this, I love you.” I muffle through the scarf that was shoved in my mouth, “how could you?” I realize now why my father was always gone. Why he never explained fully where he was, just shouted out random continents. Why I was always alone with a nanny that never payed any attention, and basically hated me anyway. Shoved and tossed aside, I still remember that I could always at least count on my mother trying to love me, and my father, or should I say Cartelo, refusing to allow her to touch me, hug me, hold me. I have to reflect that I’ve been so caught up in my self-pity and surprise that I didn’t think of my mom.
“Where is she?” I hear Cartelo shout, “if you think that you are going to take her, just know, you’ll die first!” Gun shots again, and we’re rammed from the back. I’m thrust into the back, and feel blood starting to drip down. We’re rammed again, and this time, Cartelo screams. I hear running water and now it’s leaking into the car. I start hyperventilating and I’m trying to calm myself down long enough to get out of this situation. I take my hands and use the zip ties on my hands to saw off the ones on my feet. I then use my knee to snap off the ones of my hands. While I slam out of the back seat, I realize we’ve been thrown into a river. Cartelo’s unconscious in the front seat, a bullet in his head. To save myself, I grab his head and slam it into the window for the driver’s side. At the very least he was going to allow himself the pleasure of killing me himself. Sick bastard.
I swim out for what seems like thirty minutes, and finally find land. Through the corner of my eye, I saw an abandoned forest. I take a minute to catch my breath. I’m thinking of my mom again until I see two large figures looming nearby. I look closer and see the sign my father would wear on all his clothes. A red dragon. I start running again and hear them shout “Wait!” I’m not going to be so naïve to believe they have anything to say. I’ve seen what they can do. “Wait! We need to tell you where your mother is!” I see a cottage nearby, and start screaming for help. “We used to work for your father, please, let us help!” I stop and look at them. “If you don’t work for him anymore then why do you wear his symbol?” I asked him, crossing my arms. “It’s all we have. We’ve been stranded out here for weeks. But we know where your mother is. Your father has had her kidnapped for attempting to report him to the police so that you and her can live a normal life. He’s been the head of the mafia for the last 20 twenty years. His reign of terror is finally over, all thanks to Maxim.”
I’m finally feeling hopeful to have real parents with me. I know that this is it. I start crying tears of joy. I’m going to find her, I’m going to be with her, and I never have to worry about anything other than what time to come home before curfew, maybe play soccer. I might even – my thoughts are cut off by gunshots, both of the men, the only men who knew where my mother was, each shot dead in front of me. I turn around to see a man in rags, maybe 2 years older than me lean cockily on the wall and give me a smirk, “You’re welcome. Name’s Jack.”
I hope you’ve enjoyed this part of this short story, DETECTIVES. Part 3 to come soon! Please feel free to let me know if you want to read many more stories and have much more collaborations!

Oh, My Mother
ByMELISSA TEJADA
I stood there in my dress an hour before I had to be there. Prom is such a stressful time, especially when you must out dress everyone present. Of course, I am going to be prom queen. Why wouldn’t I be? I do wish my parents were around for this though. Now they are off on another trip around the world. They are in Australia, I think. I cannot keep track anymore.
I hear the doorbell ring and I rush down the turning red stairs for what feels like eternity and almost slam myself into my ten feet front doorway. I get butterflies in my stomach thinking about the man standing on the other side of this door. Still turning in my head whether this man I have been talking to is going to murder me tonight.
“First night meeting, and I never bothered to fit check him before allowing him to escort me to prom.” I whisper to myself, frustrated at my miscalculation. We have been talking for weeks but is this how I want to start the relationship. Is this how I want to get back at my dad? By dating older men, I met online? Not that he cares.
I push all this down and open with a wide smile. I might be crumbling inside, but the moment I show weakness the world will realize it has a crack to break into.
“Why hello there my knight in shining armor.” He appears with a BMW limo, and I am taken aback. At this rate, I can disown my father completely. “
So, she’s legal and beautiful,” he says with a grin on his face. His looming stare makes me uncomfortable. My birthday was two months ago, and ever since then I have been speaking to Maxim. He is an entrepreneur, rich beyond compare, not richer than my father but enough to cut ties.
“Let’s get this over with.” I grab him by his tie and lure him into the car.
We were driving for about fifteen minutes, and something feels off. My gut is wrenching, and my intuition tells me Maxim is planning something. He is checking his phone every two minutes, I counted, and his body language seems tense. I look out the window to see we have detoured.
I try to keep my calm, “so, did I meet your expectations? Or were you waiting until we were in an enclosed off space to learn how to set things in motion?” I say, trying to disarm him. He places his hand on my knee and slowly rises his hands up to my thigh.
“We certainly don’t have to wait until later” he says with his lips next to my ear, breathing down into my neck. “Is that where we’re going now?” I croaked out, trying to keep the mood I have set for information. If there was one thing my father taught me, is to use all tools at my disposal, sexuality being one of them. That, however, does not seem to work here. He breaks our touch, and we stop at an abandoned factory.
“Where are we?” Maxim sees my anxiety rising and at once produces an excuse, “simply a quick business meeting with a client. I promise it won’t be long.” My heart sinks into my chest and I am convinced I am getting sold off into prostitution or that I will end up being one of those kids on tv found on the side of the road in black bags and pieces.
Two hours have passed now and I’m still waiting in the car. I’ve thought of different escape routes and can’t wrap my head around getting away from the driver. I’m in heels, there’s no way I’m outrunning this. I’ve had enough of this and muster up the courage to step inside the factory. There is no way that I’m missing this prom when I’ve been prepping and negotiating, setting up and building my reputation for months to make prom queen. It’s my right. I walk in on a bunch of men on metal, foldable chairs, sitting in a circle, guns in hand. As soon as I open the door, all the men jump out of their chairs with their guns pointed at my face.
“What the hell are you doing in here, you were supposed to wait in the car!” Maxim shouts at me, face red, trembling. Why is he trembling?
“The hell I am going to wait, this is the most important night of my life and I’m an hour late because you have scheduling issues, we need to go now!” I will not back down. I’ve let enough people walk all over me.
“Alicia, what the hell is the meaning of this?” A tall, 6’5 man steps out from behind Maxim, and I instantly recognize his face. This time, I turn pale, and I feel like my knees are going to give out. “Dad?”
Stay tuned for the next part of this most intriguing short story, DETECTIVES. I hope it has hooked your interest as it has me. Feel free to let me know if you are interested in seeing more collaborations with other awesome DETECTIVES, like Melissa!
Hey there, DETECTIVES! DETECTIVE WRITER here and I’m here to give you another fun history lesson but this one is also super short and truly jaw dropping. This week, we are going to talk about three famous genocides or in simple terms, mass murders in history! But…. murder mystery edition of course! So sit back, relax, and grab your magnifying glass while I take you back in time, DETECTIVES!
August Yogurt Shop Murders in 1991
In 1991, Austin Texas, four teenage girls were murdered by an unknown individual(s) inside an I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt! A fire had first occurred and once police noticed, they found a gruesome scene. The victims were thirteen year old Amy Ayers, seventeen year old Eliza Thomas, seventeen year old Jennifer Harbison and her fifteen year old sister, Sarah and were all found nude and slain execution style in the back of their heads. To this day, the murders have not been solved.
2. Burger Chef Murders of 1978
Burger Chef was a fast food restaurant chain that closed down in the late 90s. Now, I know, DETECTIVES, for many of us, I never heard of it either and seems a shame for a mass murder to occur? I mean, can you imagine a murder happening at McDonalds? Anyhow, in Indiana 1978, four Burger Chef employees were found dead when another employee came in around midnight and found the money safe open and the restaurant empty. Initially, the site was considered a robbery gone bad or that the employees had stolen money from the chain themselves. When the victims were found, they were all wearing their Burger Chef uniforms in the woods of Johnson County. Unfortunately, the case has not moved forward in discovering just who the killer(s) were.
3. Ardenwald Axe Murders of 1911
In 1911, Portland, Oregon, just like the VilliscaAxe Murders of 1912, a family of four were found bludgeoned to death with an axe. The female victims were sexually assaulted and it was considered perhaps to be sexually motivated. The murderer(s) is yet to be discovered.
4. Lane Bryant Shooting of 2008
Five women were shot and killed with only one surviving victim, a part time employee. The shooter was described as an African American man with cornrows in his hair with a receding hairline; however, he or she has yet to be revealed.
Such tragedies that have yet to be solved but who knows, DETECTIVES, perhaps if you sleuth, you may be the one to solve the crimes listed above or even much more. You have such amazing potential DETECTIVES and let’s check out much more secrets together!
Hey there, DETECTIVES! DETECTIVE WRITER here and I’m back again to give you another history lesson but no worries, this one is short and fascinating too. This time, I’m going to tell you all about 2 unsolved murders and 2 famous murders. Feel free to let me know in the COMMENTS if you would like to have any future history lessons, DETECTIVE WRITER style!
The Villisca Axe Murders of 1912
One dark June night, six children and two adults were mysteriously bludgeoned to death with an axe by an unknown person(s). To this day, no one knows who the perpetrator actually was despite suspecting a local reverend may have been the culprit, nor the motives behind the murders, especially since the youngest victim was only five years old. The family of six with two house guests were found brutally slain with severe head wounds and the only witness to the horrific crime still stands today. However, if you wish to see the house for yourself, tours are offered daily and you may even have a chance to sleep overnight.
In 1982, over seven people were poisoned to death with cyanide found in their Tylenol meds. Copycat murders soon followed. To this day, no one even has a clue who managed to lace cyanide in medicine; however, it showed the nation a lesson to take precaution on where you receive or purchase any type of over the counter meds and drugs.
3. The Murder of Tupac Shakur (1971 – 1996)
Oh, goodness, what could be said to emphasize the raw talent and power of this great rapper, Tupac? New Yorker born and raised, sold over 75 million records, and considered to be one of the best selling music artists of all time even after his death couldn’t do him justice. Unforunately, his successful rapping career came to an end when he was killed in a drive by shooting when he and Suge Knight were stopped at a red light. No one knows who did it nor why even though there have been quite a number of suspects but none strong enough to get a conviction.
4. The Murder of JonBenet Ramsey(1990 – 1996)
As if life couldn’t get any more unfair, this beautiful six year old girl was found dead by her dad in their house basement with a broken skull, stranglation, and much worse. She was initially declared missing but once she was found, her death was ruled a homicide. Her parents were accused of being her killer(s); nonetheless, her case remains open and unsolved.
I hope this short lesson has kept you all intrigued, DETECTIVES, who knows? Perhaps if we all come together in search for clues, maybe we can get one step closer to solving any of these cases! Let me know if you want any more lessons, DETECTIVES!
Hey there, DETECTIVES! It’s me, DETECTIVE WRITER here. This week, we are going to talk about a brand new topic: the most petrifying and unreal serial killers both known and unknown. That’s right, we’re going do a short history lesson but don’t you worry, it’s fun and sweet well for me at least! But all jokes aside, let’s get started…
Ted Bundy(1946 – 1989)
Now, I know we have all heard of him thanks to childhood crush and High School Musical star, Zac Efron and a few articles of him popping up and about, but Mr. Ted Bundy was one charming man who led dozens of innocent women and young ladies to their horrific deaths during the 1970s. Investigators have speculated that Bundy’s killing spree may have started much earlier than the 70s as several bodies were found murdered in similar manners as Bundy’s victims. For some particular reason, Bundy kept some of his victim’s severed heads as mementos as though he wasn’t terrifyingly strange enough.
2. Jack the Ripper(Unknown)
I know we have all heard of this strange individual once or twice before but the fact that no one has no idea just who he or she is, makes them even more strange. Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer who is believed to have committed over five gruesome murders between the late 1880s through the early 1890s. There have been a few assumptions over who the killer could have been or if there was more than one but unfortunately, there is no actual way of knowing.
3. The Zodiac Killer(Unknown)
An unknown serial killer who targeted couples, only two men have survived. He or she is believed to have committed a murder spree through 1960s through 1970s but tragically, similar to Jack the Ripper, no one has no way of knowing who the perpetrator actually is because he or she made sure of that.
4. Pedro Lopez(1948 – ?)
No, DETECTIVES, not the baseball player- the serial killer. This individual is from Columbia and has reported to have committed over 300 murders of young women and sexually assaulted over 100 young girls. I would truly love to say this individual is behind bars but sadly, he was released in 1998 due to “Good behavior” and in 2002, he was reported to have murdered someone else but no one knows where he is to this day.
5. Jeffrey Dahmer(1960 – 1994)
This individual had murdered more than 17 young men and boys, perhaps over some kind of fetish and even kept photos of some of his victims mutilated bodies. In order to hide the corpses, he kept a vat of acid. He was killed in 1994 by one of his fellow intimates, Christopher Scarver.
I know, these people are scary but don’t worry, DETECTIVES, the longer we continue to solve crimes, the more we can help make the world a much better world through positivity and faith. Just one day at a time.
